PRINCES' GATES at EXHIBITION PLACE
Toronto, Ontario
James Bailey Architect was retained for the final two phases of a major multi-phased restoration of the Princes' Gates, the landmark entrance to the Exhibition Place grounds. The project was made possible thanks to the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund of the Federal Government. The restoration focused on the restoration of the Central Arch and the two end Pylon Structures. James Bailey Architect undertook an extensive stone by stone audit of the existing structure, including the condition of all existing precast stone, interior brick walls, flashings, concrete roof slabs, precast statuaries at the top of the arch and the end Pylons. The condition of the existing mechanical system, which ventilated the interior cavities, was also reviewed.
Significant deterioration of the structure’s fabric was noted and major intervention was required. This included the rebuilding of the four main central columns, recreating and rebuilding of all sculptural elements, replacing of all deteriorated precast units, full repointing, structural bracing of the central arch and masonry cleaning. Proper attic access and adequate mechanical ventilation were introduced. All rooftop slabs were replaced/repaired to make the structures weathertight.
The project was completed successfully, despite the scheduling challenges presented by a construction site which is a major entrance to the Exhibition Grounds and crosses an active roadway.
