James Bailey Architect was retained in 2013 to provide consulting services for potential restoration work related to three separate scopes as identified by the Church's Property Committee: slate roof restoration, crack and plaster repairs in the Nave, as well as repair and refinishing of the historic pine floor of the Nave.
It was later decided to proceed only with the roof restoration at present. The project was tendered in the spring of 2014 and the construction took place during the months of July and August. The restoration included localized removal and replacement of slate, specifically in the valleys and eaves areas, as well as the reinforcing and restructuring of the supporting batten system which was the underlying reason for the roof deterioration. The existing snow-guard system was improved and supplemented with new matching guards. Matching of existing materials and colours was of prime concern due to the heritage nature of the building and a uniform look was achieved to the full satisfaction of the Client.
The work had to be closely coordinated with the City of Toronto because of its location in a busy public square, as well as with the Church's own operations and frequent events.
