CHURCH OF ST. CUTHBERT'S
Toronto, Ontario
While the church of St. Cuthbert's was established in 1889, the building that we know today was not begun until 1913. From 1913 to 1923 only the basement was complete. The chancel was not added until 1938. Additional church facilities were added in the 1960's. This brief chronology is of significance in that it demonstrates that St. Cuthbert's has evolved over many generations, and has had its fabric "retailored" as required to meet the needs of the time at hand. The new design was to emphasize the Eucharistic rite as being more central to worship and provide the flexibility necessary to allow the use of the church for wider range of activities.
In order to keep to tight budget constraints as well as to maintain continuity between the original chancel and the altered one, many of the oak furnishings were reused. The new altar incorporates the more decorative elements of the earlier altar. By way of contrast, new woodwork (the frame of the altar, the communion rail and a new cross) has been executed in maple wood stained in rich burgundy colour.
