ST.PAUL'S UNITED CHURCH
Bowmanville, Ontario
St. Paul's United Church, Bowmanville is a building dating from 1867. Although the sanctuary is not large, it is the home of a vital and growing congregation. In addition to Sunday worship, the church is used as the venue for a concert series organized by the St. Paul's Arts Council. The church became the owner of a concert grand piano, and there was a requirement to find a location for this new instrument within the chancel area, near the choir. MORE >
The Architect's assignment was, therefore, to find a design solution which increased the choir seating capacity, provided for the placement of the piano near the choir, allowed for flexible use of the chancel area, and yet did not erode the congregational seating capacity of the church.
The new chancel provides an increased open platform area, removable choir seating and modesty screens, steps across its full width, and new hardwood flooring. During the course of the design phase of the project, it was agreed that new carpeting be installed throughout the church, which allowed for the reconfiguring of the pews (angled) in response to a proposal by the Architect.
The project was completed within very tight time and budget constraints.
