KIMBOURNE PARK UNITED CHURCH
East York, Ontario

Kimbourne Park United Church is located just off Danforth Avenue in the former East York. Its congregation is small but active, and was faced with the challenge of ministering out of a building which is inaccessible to people with restricted mobility. Based on the financial support of a retired member of the congregation, the process of investigating how the building might be made accessible began. MORE >

James Bailey Architect was first retained to undertake a Barrier-free Access Feasibility Study, confirming the congregation's requirements, proposing design solutions and establishing quantity–of–scale budgets. A preferred design solution was selected and further developed into construction documents. The main tenant of the building, the East End Children Centre which occupies most of the basement area of the building, applied for and obtained a grant for washroom upgrades, which aided the project's financing.

The project consisted of providing a new ramped access to a new door into the basement level of the church (and the Children's Centre), creating a new spacious vestibule at that entrance and installing a handicap lift serving all three levels (basement, Children Centre's office and church Narthex/Sanctuary). The design of the exterior access ramp and barrier–free parking stall was heavily impacted by the need to respect an existing tree.
