THE CAPITOL THEATRE
Port Hope, Ontario

The Capitol Theatre in Port Hope was opened in 1930 as one of the first movie houses for talking movies. As an "atmospheric" theatre which provided the illusion of an evening in a medieval castle courtyard, it was unique and was the last remaining atmospheric theatre in operation in Canada today. Its uniqueness makes the Capitol an exceptional venue for live theatre, concerts, films and private functions. MORE >

After some years of dormancy, the Capitol Theatre was restored and refurbished for use as a community auditorium and performing arts centre. Phase I of the project was an upgrade of building infrastructure for the new use as well as the full restoration of the theatre's street facade. The exterior restoration included the reconstruction of the marquee and the restoration of the theatre's neon sign.

Phase II of the project was a full reconstruction of the floor of the auditorium to provide improved sigh-lines and under-floor ventilation, the introduction of a new orchestra pit, and the restoration of the historic decoration in the auditorium and lobby areas. The restored theatre accommodates approximately 400 patrons.
